Mitch Mitchell
One of rock's greatest drummers, John "Mitch" Mitchell, who rose to fame backing Jimi Hendrix, has died. He was 61 years old. In 1966, the 20-year-old Mitchell joined Hendrix and bass player Noel Redding in the newly formed Jimi Hendrix Experience. He proved to be a perfect match for Hendrix, playing with the skill and complexity of a jazz percussionist and the power of a rock drummer. The last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mitchell had recently been on the road with the Experience Hendrix tour.
